A Banner Year for Sagas

The Banner Saga, the hand-drawn, Viking-inspired strategy/RPG from Stoic Studio, is having an excellent year. After a massively successful Kickstarter campaign and last year’s release of the initial game and plans to release the second game in the series this coming winter, developer Stoic Studio and publisher Versus Evil have announced that a tabletop miniatures game is also in the works.

Getting the Warband Back Together

Entitled The Banner Saga: Warbands, the miniatures board game will be produced by Indiana-based company MegaCon Games. MegaCon Games made the announcement at this year’s GenCon, the world’s largest tabletop gaming convention, which takes place this weekend, July 30th through August 2nd, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

While relatively few details on the game have emerged as of yet, the companies involved state that the game is already in production, and a website is already online. In the coming days, MegaCon Games will also be announcing a Kickstarter campaign.

Sagas in Miniature

MegaCon Games is already experienced doing Kickstarter campaigns for miniatures games. Though a fairly small company, they have already conducted successful campaigns for MERCS, a squad-based science fiction skirmish game, and Myth, a cooperative fantasy combat game.

The company’s experience sculpting high quality miniatures will serve them well for The Banner Saga: Warbands. The Banner Saga, while receiving mixed reviews for its particular take on turn-based tactical combat, received almost universal praise for its art style and atmosphere (it made the top of IndieGameReviewer writer InfinityWaltz’s Top Five Games of 2015 list), which combined a classic hand-drawn animation style with elements inspired by Norse mythology.

The Saga Continues…

More details on The Banner Saga: Warbands, including price tiers for the Kickstarter campaign, are expected after the conclusion of GenCon. In the meantime, you can get reacquainted with The Banner Saga’s combat system by playing the online free-to-play multiplayer game, The Banner Saga: Factions or by watching the trailer for The Banner Saga 2 below.
