Yeah Jam Fury: U, Me, Everybody! by McLeodGaming Inc. and World Entertainment Studios LLC

Yeah Jam Fury: U, Me, Everybody! is a platformer with a leaning towards puzzle solving from developers McLeodGaming (perhaps best known as the creators of the popular fan game Super Smash Flash 2). Yeah Jam Fury: UME is an enhanced version of McLeodGaming’s original Yeah Jam Fury – a flash game on Newgrounds. This newer version offers enhanced visuals and an abundance of other features to set it apart from its predecessor.

Yeah, Now We’re Jamming with Fury

Yeah Jam Fury: UME is a side-scrolling platformer built around the concept of controlling only one of three interchangeable characters at a time. The three characters each have their own personality and skill-set, making it necessary to use all of them to reach the mangoes that they so enjoy at the end of each level.

Yeah is slow, but he can place blocks from a limited supply, and he can jump higher than the other two characters. Jam is speedy and can hop from wall to wall; his normal jump, however, is fairly weak. Fury, meanwhile, is slow and completely unable to jump, but he can smash blocks, clearing the way and adding to Yeah’s resource pool from which to place new blocks.

Get Movin’

The game provides a short tutorial, but it doesn’t dither about, and it isn’t long before the difficulty curve begins to ramp up quite aggressively. The curve isn’t exactly steady, and not all of Yeah Jam Fury: UME’s levels are equal in quality, but for the most part they all offer a decent challenge. Some of the later ones are particularly tough. Some levels are designed for just one of the three characters, whilst others limit you to one character in some areas.

The game demands a certain level of precision for most of its stages, and tricky platforming levels are prolific throughout Yeah Jam Fury: YME. The shear number of levels is impressive, and whether you favor fast-paced jumping or careful puzzle-solving you won’t have to wait long for your kind of challenge to come around.

Pretty Flashy

Yeah Jam Fury: UME is visually charming, if a little reminiscent of its flash game origins. The developers have taken a few of the more well-worn platformer tropes and put them to good use in giving their game a sweet appeal. For example, blocks have faces (causing the protagonists to question the disposition of said blocks in the game’s “Memory Book”). The music is excellent and lends character to the various stage types, from a festive-sounding theme for snowy worlds to a sleepy tune for stages set against a moon backdrop.

The scope of what is on offer in Yeah Jam Fury: UME is worthy of note; the game comes packaged with a vast selection of stages which can be played consecutively or via “shuffle” mode. There is also a level creation tool that is very simple to use, and as a result it is possible to download a theoretically unending supply of challenges.

Finally, a kind of story unfolds as the completion of various achievements unlocks new pages of the “Memory Book,” which contains conversations between the three characters (submitted to the book, as they are incapable of all existing simultaneously to have a face-to-face conversation).

All in all Yeah Jam Fury: UME is an upbeat, energetic platformer that is generous with its content. Some levels demonstrate better design thought than others, but nevertheless this a worthy title for fans of platformers with a touch of puzzling.
