OK We Have a Winner

Cartoon Network announced this winner of its first game jam contest this weekend at PAX East. Portland, Oregon dev studio Wake Robin Games beat out 200 competitors with their submission, OK K.O.! Dynamite’s Action News.

The theme of the game jam itself required developers to complete a game concept based on the OK K.O.! web series within 48 hours. The winner puts players in the shoes of reporter Dynamite Watkins and tasks them with investigating and fighting crimes in an ‘80s cyberpunk setting.

OK K.O.! Dynamite’s Action News premiered this weekend at the Cartoon Network booth at PAX East. Wake Robin Games artist Conley Smith also appeared at the conversation in a panel entitled “Cartoon Network Games: Going Indie with Steven Universe and OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes” on Saturday, March 11th.

The game will be out later this year as a free download for mobile platforms.

OK K.O.! Projects Okayed!

Cartoon Network also made several additional announcements about OK K.O. during the past week. A new television series based on the web series was announced. Entitled OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, the show will air on the network itself. Set in a “mall for heroes,” the series features main character K.O. and his friends warding off attempts by the villain Lord Boxman to destroy the mall.

In addition to the series and the OK K.O.! Dynamite’s Action News mobile game, Capybara Games – the studio best known for such indie critical darlings as Super Time Force and Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP – will be developing a console game connected to the series.

Given the video game influences of the OK K.O.! setting and story, Capybara Games stated, “helping to build K.O’s world is one of the coolest things we’ve been a part of. With OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, [series creator] Ian Jones-Quartey and [creative director] Toby [Jones] are cramming the soul of video games into a cartoon. CAPY is setting out to do the reverse – mash the language of cartoons into a video game. We think it’s pretty cool, and we hope fans of both games and cartoons dig it when it releases.”
