Review: Worldweaver’s Fighting Fantasy Series for Kindle

4.5

Platforms: Kindle

Game Name: Worldweaver's Fighting Fantasy Series for Kindle

Genre: Adventure

From the developer:

A game book is an interactive story. As you read you will make decisions as to which way to go, what to say to other characters, and what to do with items you might find. A convenient in-game map tracks places you have visited, items, or monsters encountered.

What We Think:

If you were one of the lucky kids that grew up with Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone’s take on Choose Your Own Adventure books in the form of the Fighting Fantasy series and you are hip to the Kindle way of things, you are in for a real treat. Worldweaver has started converting and releasing beautifully converted versions of the original game series’ texts to the e-book format and handles all the dice rolls, stats assigning and mapping for you. While early on there were gripes about the difficulty in winning battles, this was more a fault of the fact that in “real life” people “cheated” more than they may have cared to admit by re-rolling during combat, or dog-earing the previous page in the event that their choice led to their demise. These are factors for which the mechanics themselves cannot be held accountable, and in fact, playing it this “straight and narrow” way finally allows the games to played as they were intended, in other words, we can finally assess whether or not the books were ever properly balanced.

As in the originals you can deploy a certain number of points to Strength, Skill and Luck and also choose what spells you will have in limited quantities for each adventure – choose wisely!

The recent 1.1 update addresses page turn speed which has been greatly improved.

With wonderful graphic transfers and engaging stories, this is about as much fun as you can have playing a game on an e-ink reader. Highly recommended as these provide perhaps the perfect realization of what an e-ink reader can grant a book lover interested in interactive fantasy. The price isn’t so bad either with titles ranging between 1.99 and 3.99. We hope to see all of the titles released eventually. See below for a complete list of the series’ book covers.

One tip: be sure to put extra points into Luck and especially Skill – you will need the edge in order to progress deeper into the wonderful plotlines.
